What I Built / Shipped / Posted
I do most of my writing and prep work for my content in Notion. It has been a lifelong struggle to find the most effective way to stay organized. Notion is not bad. I stopped using it for a while because copying and pasting into Substack broke; formatting was never preserved, and I had to spend as much time correcting failed pastes as I did writing the original. I also took a step back from Notion at that time and did more offline work in Apple Notes. Notion has evolved, added an offline mode, and I’ve improved my coding skills. I’ve built a small package that allows me to draft in Notion, then run a script to pull my draft and recreate it on Substack. Saves me some time. I’m not entirely sure why Substack’s API doesn’t allow for posting content. Maybe it prevents a lot of spam content from getting uploaded. Whatever the reason, I’ve got a handy workaround for my own purposes.
What I Learned
“Sometimes being a value add isn’t enough.”
Over the past couple of months, I’ve had a few important meetings. Long story short, none of them ended the way I would have liked. It’s intriguing and perplexing to me, trying to figure out the cost/benefit rationales folks have to go through. I don’t want to go into specifics of any of the meetings. Still, in every instance, I identified a new pain point or restated an existing one, gathered and analyzed data, and demonstrated how I could solve the problem. I admit I don’t know the circumstances surrounding any decision, but even in the instance where I offered services and contributions pro bono to a non-profit, they were declined. The potential time cost of communicating with one extra person outweighed the perceived benefits. It feels like, in many ways, we are all forced to manage the present and have little capacity even to begin thinking about tomorrow. If I’m going to succeed as a freelancer, I’m going to have to figure out how to break through this barrier.

🤪 Off-Topic Corner
It’s too soon to say, considering I’ve only watched it once, but I think cricket (T20) is more watchable for me than baseball.
My Current Location: Christchurch, New Zealand
There is a massive park here, Hagley Park. While taking a stroll, I stumbled upon a tree-climbing competition. It was neat to watch for a minute. We also watched a cricket test in the park last night between NZ and England at Hagley Oval. This park really is enormous.
